The surface is different

SEO optimizes for the results page — a ranked list of links. GEO optimizes for the generated answer — the synthesized response an AI engine writes. Same brand, two very different places to be present.

The unit of success is different

In SEO the win is a rank position and the click that follows. In GEO the win is inclusion in the cited answer — your brand named, linked, or accurately paraphrased inside what the engine says.

The content that wins is similar but sharper

Both reward clear, factual, cite-worthy content. GEO additionally rewards content an AI can quote directly: concise definitions, comparison tables, and FAQ sections with structured data. The answer usually has to already exist on a page the engine can read and attribute.

Measurement differs

SEO has mature rank trackers. GEO needs answer-citation tracking across engines — checking whether and how your brand is cited per query and engine. GeoVisor audits citation presence per query/engine and returns a GEO score you can track over time.

They compound, they don't compete

Good SEO makes content findable; good GEO makes it quotable. Most teams should run both rather than treat one as a replacement for the other.
